Donald Trump Is Using Puerto Rico’s Crisis To Push His War Against The MediaThis isn’t the first time the president dragged the news media during a national crisis.
While residents of Puerto Rico struggle to get access to basic necessities like potable water and food, President Donald Trump has launched a full-fledged attack on the news media and, even more concerning, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.
Cruz, the mayor of Puerto Rico’s largest city, made several emotional pleas this week to the media, tearfully begging for the government to provide more aid to the islands residents and for private citizens to make calls to Congress or to donate money or time.
This isn’t the first time that Trump has used a national crisis to attack the news media.
When the Charlottesville white supremacy rally escalated into deadly violence, Trump spent an unusual amount of time condemning the media for reporting on his response to it. He’s blamed “fake news” for the federal investigation looking into his campaign’s ties to Russia. He’s even dragged “fake news” into the GOP’s failed attempts to replace Obamacare.
This time, however, he’s exploiting a devastated island filled with Americans who are looking for help. And the mayor of San Juan won’t stand for it.
“The goal is one: Saving lives,” Cruz tweeted Saturday after Trump attacked both her and the reporters covering Puerto Rico’s devastation.
“This is the time to show our ‘true colors.’ We cannot be distracted by anything else.
In my opinion news media cant be drawn into a vulnerable situation. Even though we as supporters share and Trump who is aware of the money in media, still locals are upset. Its not helping and with hurricane season neing as bad as ever who to say we were ever prepared. The brave lead but sometimes were not always right. And sometimes mother nature can and will surprise us give us a run for our money.
Puerto Rico can be a start to a more depriveing issue like aid and relief. The vulnerable situation is like a broken leaf, battling the winds of changing democracy.
