Donald Trump And His War Against Media

Donald Trump Is Using Puerto Rico’s Crisis To Push His War Against The MediaThis isn’t the first time the president dragged the news media during a national crisis. While residents of Puerto Rico struggle to get access to basic necessities like potable water and food, President Donald Trump has launched a full-fledged attack on the news media and, even more concerning, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz. Cruz, the mayor of Puerto Rico’s largest city, made several emotional pleas this week to the media, tearfully begging for the government to provide more aid to the islands residents and for private citizens to make calls to Congress or to donate money or time. This isn’t the first time that Trump has used a national crisis to attack the news media. When the Charlottesville white supremacy rally escalated into deadly violence, Trump spent an unusual amount of time condemning the media for reporting on his response to it. He’s blamed “fake news” for the federal investigation...

How The '80s Crack Cocaine "Epidemic" Really Started Refinery29 July 7, 2017, 6:31 pm Around 30 years ago, the U.S. saw a rise in the use of crack cocaine that was termed the "crack epidemic." Now,  FX's new show Snowfall  is bringing this period of time and all of its complex issues back to the front of our consciousness — at a time when our country is in the midst of yet  another drug crisis . We know that there was a surge in the use of crack, a  form of cocaine that is smoked rather than snorted , in the '80s primarily in areas of L.A., NYC, and Miami. But the true story is much more complicated than that. And the media helped fuel this into a full-blown national moral panic. However, this was all happening at a time when the budgets for many social programs (including those relating to  food stamps  and job training) had  taken serious cuts . That means those most vulnerable to the rise in drug use were given less help to address those ...

NASA experiment simulates growing potatoes on MARS: Space spuds could help us colonise the Red Planet Ridley Scott's sci-fi blockbuster  The Martian  showed Matt Damon's stranded astronaut  trying to grow potatoes  on the inhospitable surface of Mars. A team of scientists working with NASA is now attempting to make  that science fiction into a science fact   The objective is twofold: firstly, as a stepping stone to figuring out how to grow space spuds for real once we get humans to Mars. And secondly, to show how resultant the humble potato is and potentially save lives here on Earth. The idea is that the experiment will pressure governments to fund development of farming in devastated areas around the globe. "How better to learn about climate change than by growing crops on a planet that died two billion years ago?" said Joel Ranck, head of communications at the International Potato Center. "We need people to understand that if we can grow potatoes ...

John Glenn, American Hero of the Space Age, Dies at 95

John Glenn, a freckle-faced son of Ohio who was hailed as a national hero and a symbol of the space age as the first American to orbit Earth, then became a national political figure for 24 years in the Senate, died on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. He was 95. Ohio State University announced his death. Mr. Glenn had recently been hospitalized at the university at the James Cancer Center, though Ohio State officials said at the time that admission there did not necessarily mean he had cancer. He had kept an office at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, which he helped found, and also had a home in Columbus. In just five hours on Feb. 20, 1962, Mr. Glenn joined a select roster of Americans whose feats have seized the country’s imagination and come to embody a moment in its history, figures like Lewis and Clark, the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh.
